The contractor you're connected with is an independent business, responsible for its own work, licensing, insurance, permits, pricing and warranties. Before work begins, we encourage you to:
- ask for the contractor's license number and check it on the Maryland Home Improvement Commission's online license search. MHIC says only licensed contractors may enter into contracts with homeowners to perform home improvement work
- ask who will do any plumbing and electrical work, since those are separately regulated trades
- ask whether the work needs a permit, and who will apply for it
